Sin Hong Choon Trading Co. Blends Rich Historical Culture with Technology to Showcase its Heritage

The Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs is hosting an event entitled “Reviving Elegance in the Original Universe: A Journey Through the Artistry of Tea” at Sin Hong Choon Trading Co., a heritage building completed in 1934. Located in the Dadaocheng area, the building is a well-preserved mixed-use Western-style structure that combined the functions of tea house, tea-roasting factory, warehouse, and residence. It also preserves the rich cultural history of Dadaocheng’s tea merchants.

The technological highlight of the event uses extended reality to showcase Sin Hong Choon’s crown jewel: a rectangular embroidered fabric measuring an impressive 15 meters in length and featuring motifs of the Eight Immortals as its central theme. Known as the “Purple Ground” (紫地新芳春行大八仙彩), traditionally it is hung above doorways during joyous or important occasions to bring good fortune and happiness.

The interactive experience includes five interactive stations—including tea picking, winnowing, and tea roasting—all mediated through the use of virtual and physical spaces. It immerses visitors in a world from a time gone by where the aroma of tea leaves permeates the air, allowing them to feel they are part of the enchanting history of local tea culture.
