The military village is a unique historical phenomenon in Taiwan, originating in 1949 when millions of Chinese military personnel and civilians came to Taiwan when the Nationalists retreated to the island. 

The military villages served as temporary settlements. The residents brought with them nostalgia and cultures from across China and developed a distinct “military village culture” that adapted to the local environment. 

Over time, this culture became an integral part of Taiwan’s historical memory. Military village culture has many aspects, and traces can be found in various forms of popular culture, including architecture, food, literature, music, theater, and more.

Taipei Military Dependents’ Villages Festival is held annually from September to October and features a series of activities. For those who carry memories of military villages, the festival provides an opportunity to enjoy nostalgic recollections, enabling people with common experiences to share their stories. 

For younger generations, who may be unfamiliar with military village culture, the festival highlights the connection between this culture and contemporary society. It sparks curiosity among young people, encouraging them to engage with and learn about this cultural heritage, ensuring that military village culture is passed down through the memories of future generations.
