The Three Great Puppetry Arts: Grasp Heaven and Earth

The Three Great Puppetry Arts: Grasp Heaven and Earth

Renowned for its puppetry performances, DaDaoCheng Theater also hosts a permanent exhibition in the Taipei City Arts Promotion Office. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 5 pm (closed Mondays and during Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival). The theater is situated in the 8th-floor corridor at No. 21, Sec. 1, Dihua St., Datong District, Taipei City.

Skillfully manipulated by talented puppeteers, puppets spring into life as if animated by their own souls, expertly weaving timeless tales. Marionettes radiate solemnity and dignity, glove puppetry showcases endless transformations, while shadow puppets enchant with their magical and playful qualities, captivating the audience’s attention and immersing them in the enchanting world of the stage.

The exhibition showcases the three major forms of puppetry: glove puppetry, marionette puppetry, and shadow puppetry. The displayed items primarily consist of puppets and props from DaDaoCheng Theater collection, along with numerous precious vintage photographs.

The exhibition area also features multimedia audio-visual content explaining the history of puppetry and how it has developed. Although all three puppetry forms rely on the skilled hands of puppeteers to “grasp heaven and earth”, each possesses its unique style and charm. We cordially invite everyone to explore the wonders of the Three Great Puppetry Arts!
