A One and A Two: Edward Yang Retrospective

The world’s first retrospective of renowned Taiwanese film director Edward Yang is now being jointly presented by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Running until October 22, the retrospective is both film festival and exhibition, held simultaneously in the two venues.

In addition to showcasing the most comprehensive collection of Edward Yang’s filmography to date and including special thematic screenings, the immersive exhibition will guide the audience into Yang’s cinematic realm. By unveiling previously unseen documents and audiovisual materials, the exhibition offers an opportunity to contemplate his distinctive creative journey.

Edward Yang was one of the most iconic and internationally acclaimed film directors of Taiwanese New Wave Cinema, which marked the beginning of Taiwan’s unique cinematic culture of the 1980s. His works possess an insightful and critical perspective that transcends time, encompassing urban representation, gender dynamics, political meditation, historical violence, and societal transformation.

This retrospective focuses primarily on Edward Yang's cinematic creations, aiming to present his cinematic world and creative contemplations from a wide range of perspectives.
