Many years ago, on an island known as Penglai, a major conflict broke out between humans and supernatural beings. The war disrupted their longstanding symbiosis, nearly exterminating the supernatural beings who once thrived on the people’s fears and delusions.

Penglai, along with the rest of the world, underwent a profound transformation. The rulers established a city, removing the old, obsolete, and irrational. Deities lost their worshippers, and the supernatural beings were no longer objects of fear. Civilization and progress became the new faith of humanity, encompassing domains such as time, medicine, law, the military, aviation, energy and more.

Fifteen years after the war, the government is preparing for the “New World Expo” to showcase human governance on the surface world, involving extensive construction. A young rickshaw puller suddenly discovers unique abilities in himself and boards the enigmatic midnight train, which takes him to the remnants of the supernatural community.
