Beitou Park Playground

It’s a short walk from Beitou metro station to Xinbeitou station, where you’ll find a number of hot spring hotels and a public bathhouse favored by locals. Each winter, this area is the top choice for Taipei residents seeking refuge from the cold.

Already in the Japanese era, people had fallen in love with the experience of soaking in Beitou’s hot springs. Today, Beitou Park Playground serves as an extension of the old public bathhouse, allowing adults to enjoy the hot springs while their children play in the nearby park. Young children who once slid down the stone slides long ago are now grandparents, yet the slides remain in the park, faithful playmates to each new generation.

Also boasting a century-long history are the tropical plants that surround the park, originally planted by the Japanese. These lush plants reflect the colonial imagination of a “southern land”. Though the colonizers have long since departed, the reek of sulfur still lingers in the air.
