A Living History: Experiencing a Grand Era

Rong-Yu Wang was nominated for the Best Director and Best Performance Group Awards at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music with his work “Matinee in the Rain”.

Now, together with the Golden Bough Theatre, Wang presents “Xilaian”, a new work set against the backdrop of the 1915 armed anti-Japanese uprising by Han Chinese and Pingpu Aborigines that recreates a breathtaking battle by the righteous army.

The story revolves around the themes of brotherhood and resistance against Japanese colonial rule, delving into a lesser-known, yet more thrilling side of Taiwanese history through intricate character portrayal and intensely vivid scenes, exploring a legendary tale of heroism that rivals official historical accounts.

The Party Theatre Group’s “Father Mother” spans half a century of historical and political change. Protagonist Wen is approaching fifty when he discovers an old photo of his possible biological father among his adoptive father’s belongings, revealing long-hidden family secrets and prompting a journey to uncover his roots.

This play mirrors the development of local Taiwanese puppet theater, illustrating the struggles of the Taiwanese people to survive under different regimes, and addressing a range of issues, such as national identity, individual identity and gender identity.
