Yin Foo-sun’s Residence

This was the Taiwan residence of the late great philosopher and freedom advocate Yin Foo-sun. A professor in the Department of Philosophy, National Taiwan University (NTU), Yin was a lifelong promoter of liberty, whose credo was, “Better to die speaking out than to live in silence.” He courageously resisted the authorities and criticized the politics of his time, devoting himself to the promotion of learning and inspiring the conscience of society. He was a true contributor to the democratization of Taiwan.
Upon arriving in Taiwan, Yin first resided at the Free China Dormitory, moving to this building in 1956, where he lived the remainder of his days. He personally built the house with materials collected from a demolished dormitory for NTU security officers. Yin also created a manmade canal and hill, naming them “Yugong River” and “Mt. Gufeng,” where students and neighbors gathered to express themselves, and enjoyed barbecues and water activities.
