How to distinguish among National Monuments and Municipal Heritage Sites from Class 1 to 3

Before June 30, 1997, historical sites and monuments in Taiwan were all designated by the Ministry of the Interior. Historical sites are ranked as Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. Since June 30, 1997, historical sites have been designated by the Ministry of the Interior as well as city and county governments. Historical sites designated by the Ministry of the Interior are classified as National Monuments while those designated by city and county governments are classified as Municipal Heritage Sites. Under the new version of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act revised and announced on November 1, 2005, historical sites designated by the Ministry of Culture are classified as National Monuments, those designated by municipalities are classified as Municipal Heritage Sites, and those designated by city and county governments are classified as City and County Heritage Sites.
