When you think of a mine, you might picture the isolated villages in old movies, with winding mountain roads, trolleys, and year-round mist. It’s hard to believe any such mine could exist in the bustling Xinyi District!
Just a 20-minute bike ride or a 40-minute walk, followed by a short uphill climb, will take you to Hexing Mine. Established in the late Japanese colonial period, the mine was abandoned in the 1970s when mining operations ceased. Following renovation and development by the city government, it has been transformed into a theme park. Nearby, you’ll find a bat cave, offering a chance to get up close to these mammalian relatives hanging from the ceiling. Nature enthusiasts can also admire the stalactites inside the mine and the various erosion control methods used on the surrounding slopes.
Although small, this mine offers a glimpse into the once-thriving mining industry. After exploring the mine, you can also take a stroll along the nearby Four Beasts Hiking Trail for a scenic adventure!
