Taipei Arts Festival—Reeling Hyperreality
Taipei Arts Festival, a cultural landmark of the capital, has been organized by Taipei Performing Arts Center (TPAC) since 2018. The festival is envisioned as a place where members of the public can take the first step in their journey through the arts and also as a creative hub for artists. The festival uses creativity as a channel to share Taipei’s vitality, diversity, and thriving multiculturalism with the rest of the world. In 2023, TPAC appointed River Lin, a Taiwanese artist based in Paris, as curator of the Taipei Arts Festival. By drawing on his extensive experience in international curation and his longstanding engagement with Taiwan’s visual and performing arts ecology, Lin has enabled the festival to open up new channels of dialogue and exchange. Now, in its 27th year, the Taipei Arts Festival will run from September 11 to September 28. This year’s theme is Reeling Hyperreality and will include eight ticketed productions spanning theatre, film, dance, installation, and experimental performance, featuring artists from Japan, Indonesia, the United States, Germany, Philippines, and Taiwan. In addition, the festival includes the TPAC Faces (北藝人物) and TPAC Notes (北藝筆記) lecture series, where audiences are invited to engage in dialogue with creators, the city, and the wider world, all while experiencing the unique sense of reality the theatre can bring.
